About Green Computing

Businesses are turning to digital technologies such as big data analytics, IoT (the Internet of Things), and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve operational efficiency, communication, and new market access. While digital technologies have greatly benefitted businesses, the growing reliance on it significantly impacts the environment.

Green Computing

Companies need to consider their environmental impact and seek to balance the benefits of digital technologies with environmental sustainability so that economic growth does not come at the expense of our planet.

IMDA is helping businesses strengthen digital sustainability through:

  • The design, development, and deployment of sustainable digital applications.
  • Advancing technologies to develop low-carbon digital applications.
  • Encouraging the development of innovative carbon-aware solutions.

Jointly developed with Microsoft, we have also released a set of Sustainable Software Development Guidelines (5.35MB), which provide a clear roadmap for developers to prioritize energy efficiency and carbon awareness, in Oct 2023.

Singapore's leadership in green AI was recognised in a report on “Greening AI: A Policy Agenda for the Artificial Intelligence and Energy Revolutions" launched by The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change at ATxSG 2024. It showcases our pioneering efforts, such as optimizing data center energy efficiency and promoting green AI software development practices.

Green Software Trials

To champion the advancement and adoption of green digital solutions, we invite industry partners to participate in green software trials that will minimise the carbon footprint of their digital assets. These trials will assess and quantify the impact of carbon reduction techniques, such as resource redistribution, application modernisation, AI optimisation, and computational offload, on real-world applications.

Green Computing

IMDA and participants will gain valuable insights into the reduction of digital carbon footprint and energy consumption. The trial data will also inform the development of guidelines for building green software.

Green Computing Research

The Green Computing Funding Initiative (GCFI) drives research translation in collaboration with businesses to shape a greener and more energy-efficient ICT sector. The initiative focuses on use cases currently unmet by commercial solutions.

GCFI is funded by IMDA and the National Research Foundation under the Research Innovation and Enterprise 2025. The upcoming call for proposals invites researchers and the industry to co-develop low-carbon digital solutions.
