New category shines the spotlight on 18 female students and rising stars in the tech field

The 2021 Singapore 100 Women in Tech (SG100WIT) List was unveiled by Mrs Josephine Teo, Singapore’s Minister of Communications & Information, and Patron of the Singapore Women in Tech (SGWIT) movement, at the 2021 Tech3 Forum held today, with the theme revolving around “Reset or Rebuild? Thriving Responsibility in the Post Pandemic World".
Organised by the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) and in partnership with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the SG100WIT List is an initiative that recognises and celebrates women based in Singapore who have been inspiring their communities and making significant contributions to the tech industry. The SG100WIT List is also part of the SGWIT movement that brings together industry, government and community partners to develop and nurture female talent for the country’s rising tech sector, and reaffirms the importance of having a diverse workforce.
In support of 2021 being dedicated as the “Year of Celebrating SG Women”, the SG100WIT Committee has selected another 100 women in tech this year in recognition of their achievements and contributions.
An all new “Girls in Tech” category is also introduced in this year’s edition of the SG100WIT List, which showcased 18 female students from schools and institutions in Singapore who are pursuing their passion and interest in technology. Local schools and institutions could nominate female students 13 years old and above who are role models to their classmates and who harness the power of technology for the benefit of the community.
In total, more than 600 nominations were received from members of the public as well as from schools and universities, following an open call for SG100WIT nominations in June this year. The 100 women who made this year’s list were evaluated by a panel of influential leaders from the business, technology and academic communities, including several SG100WIT 2020 honourees.
“We are delighted to announce such an accomplished SG100WIT List for 2021,” said Dr Chong Yoke Sin, President of Singapore Computer Society. “Our awardees are outstanding youths, professionals and leaders from across the spectrum of industry, government and community, and excelled in their chosen field of tech or who have championed tech for industry. This year, we are pleased to include our first batch of aspiring girls in tech. Every one of these women and girls has a unique story that will inspire and motivate us to do the seemingly impossible. They are role models who have achieved much in Singapore’s ever-evolving and dynamic tech sector, and reaffirm the diversity of opportunities and roles for our girls and women. With the fast-paced growth of the tech sector and tech skills needed in every other sector, women will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the fulfilment of this growth.”
Said Mr Lew Chuen Hong, Chief Executive, IMDA: “In organising SG100WIT for the second year, we celebrate the achievements of the top 100 women in tech. It is heartening to see the diversity and the positive impact they have made. We hope to continue to inspire a strong pool of women and girls, to pursue opportunities in the vibrant tech sector, and achieve their potential.”
“The pool of nominees for the 2021 SG100WIT List showcased the breadth and depth of women talent in Singapore’s tech industry,” said Professor Alex Siow, Chairman for the SG100WIT Selection Committee. “Every nominee – her technical expertise or entrepreneurial spirit, her achievements and contributions, her ability to lead and inspire those around her – was carefully considered throughout the rigorous selection process. The Selection Committee certainly had our work cut out for us as we deliberated over the highly qualified nominees, which culminated in this final list of 100 exemplary women. Every single honouree brings with them the “three I’s”, values that the Selection Committee hold dear: their story is inspiring, they have significant influence in their communities, and they make a positive impact on society as a whole.”
SCS and IMDA offer their warm congratulations to all the honourees. The next edition of the SG100WIT List will take place biennially and is slated for 2023.
