The Story Lab initiative aims to bring together talent from different backgrounds to incubate story ideas and explore innovative ways to tell stories across various media platforms, from film to broadcast and even games.
As media platforms converge, storytelling skills are needed more than ever. With a more diverse and competitive media landscape, content must have a compelling story or message to capture audience’s attention. Story Lab will not only foster an appreciation of storytelling as a fundamental skill, but also aims to build capabilities in story ideation, research and development, as well as scriptwriting for different formats.
Programmes under Story Lab
- BFI Producers’ Mentorship Programme (1 July 2020 – 31 December 2020)
The Producers’ Mentorship Programme gives local producers the chance to learn all aspects of film production over a two-week course in Singapore. This will be followed with a six-month mentorship by UK film producers who will guide the participants on their project and career development. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the BFI London Film Festival, where they will undergo industry placements and benefit from exposure to international networks.
- BFI Digital Masterclass Programme (26 October 2020 – 4 November 2020)
Targeted at professionals working in the field of marketing, brand and communications, this masterclass will lay out the A to Z of filmmaking essentials from kit requirements, camera movement, editing process and understanding music rights. Participants will be equipped with the necessary vocabulary and skillset to create content for business social media accounts or longer-form promotional materials.
- David Puttnam’s ProducersLab
David Puttnam’s ProducersLab in Creative Producing and Financing (ProducersLab) seeks to nurture producers with the ability to work on scripts for episodic content across TV, online, and streaming platforms. It will equip producers not only with ideas and creative vision, but also with strong business acumen, financing and fundraising skills.
- Story Lab Apprenticeship (SLA) programme
The Story Lab Apprenticeship (SLA) programme aims to provide promising fresh media professionals with structured training and opportunities to acquire key skills and competencies across in-demand job roles in the media sector. These roles range from producing, to writing, digital marketing and content creation.
- WritersLab
WritersLab is an inaugural programme of the Story Lab by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). Organised by LASALLE College of the Arts (LASALLE), this intensive scriptwriting programme aims to push the boundaries of scriptwriting and storytelling for television and online platforms by nurturing and developing the skills of committed Singaporean film and television writers.
